​Al Shabaab fighters ambush Kenya military convoy near El-Wak town

EL WAK, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a KDF convoy in a dawn attack at El-Wak town near the Kenyan border with Somalia, inflicting heavy losses on the Kenyan military, Garowe Online reports.

A Somali military officer in El-Wak who asked not to be named said at least two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers are feared dead following Al Shabaab attack on their convoy at Busar village in Gedo province.

A military vehicle belonging to KDF was destroyed in the attack that happened near the border town of El-Wak by the militants, according to a pro-al Shabaab media outlet, citing unnamed commander.

The ambush has led to a fierce gunfight between Kenya forces and Al Shabaab which has raged on for several hours in the area. Several Al Shabaab fighters were reportedly killed during the confrontation.

The attack against the Kenyan soldiers serving with African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), is the latest in series of ambush attacks by Al Shabaab fighters in the border towns and northeast Kenyan since KDF's incursion in Somalia in 2011.

Al Shabaab carried out many deadly attacks on the AMISOM soldiers’ bases including UPDF, Burundian and the KDF from 2015 to 2016 and attack against Kenyan soldiers in El-Adde.
