MOGADISHU, Somalia - An Al-Shabaab operative was on Sunday sentenced in Somalia by the country's military court in a move that showcases the Horn of Africa nation's ability to expedite terrorism-related cases that have caused outrage besides threatening the stability of Somalia.

Hassan Ali, an Al-Shabaab suspect who is believed to have been leading several attacks in the Hiran region, was slapped with a 5-year sentence by the military court after being convicted of associating with the group within the Hiraan region in central parts of Somalia, which are prone to Al-Shabaab attacks.

Central Somalia is a key hideout for the militants who have been creating havoc within the country but in recent months, it has been under surveillance from security forces. Currently, a multi-agency team led by the Somali army, US Africa Command, and the African Union Mission Forces have been leading operations in the area.

The court established that Ali was nabbed by Somali security forces in Elgaras village armed with AK-47 rifle and grenades and on a mission to carry out attacks, which is believed to have been coordinated by the Al-Shabaab group, notorious in the region.

His conviction adds to the growing list of militants who have been jailed by the military court in the country, which is believed to be one of the most effective institutions compared to civilian courts. The military court often targets hardcore criminals and those believed to be cooperating with the Al-Shabaab.

This year alone, over 10 people have been slapped with life to death sentences across Somalia under the leadership of the Col. Shute, who leads the military courts. His team has often been a target for Al-Shabaab who accuses him of "undermining the rule of law".

Currently, there are close to 7,000 active Al-Shabaab fighters but the group has been substantially degraded following multiple operations across the country. Al-Shabaab has been fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed Somalia administration, which depends on foreign forces to restore peace and stability in the country.
