Al-Shabaab suffers losses in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Qaeda-linked group; Al-Shabaab suffered immense losses in the latest operations within Somalia, officials said, in the latest crackdown spearheaded by the Somali National Army (SNA) are working hard to liberate strategic regions in the country.

According to state media, over 80 Al-Shabaab militants were killed after an operation that took 8 hours, with the national army managing to overpower the militants. The militants lost the battle with the national army getting assistance from allies.

General Dayah, the land forces commander, said the militants suffered heavy losses, adding that the national army will continue with the operations to liberate remaining strategic towns in the country.

"Over 80 al-Shabaab deaths in a major operation by SNA and local forces in Aad. Area freed after 8-hour battle, land forces commander Gen. Dayah, confirmed to state media. Militants suffer heavy losses," state media reports.

The national army has been doing operations across the country, particularly in central and southern regions. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the US Africa Command have been assisting the national army in carrying out operations.

"Somali Armed Forces clean-up operation targets key Al-Shabaab hubs: Saydhelow, Habhirow, Buurta Qodqode, Alamka, Warta Dollar and Weeley. These areas housed recruitment centers and extortion rackets terrorizing Bay and Bokool communities."

The government of Somalia has declared total war against the militants and it projects that by December 2024, the militants would have lost the war. ATMIS has started withdrawing from the country, subsequently, handing over security responsibilities to Somali forces.
