Egypt Pledges to Strengthen Red Sea Security, Support AU Mission in Somalia
CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Friday that Egypt is working to enhance stability and security in the Horn of Africa to safeguard the strategically vital Red Sea maritime routes.
Speaking during a meeting with African ministers and delegates attending the second ministerial forum of the Russia–Africa Partnership, al-Sisi stressed that the Red Sea corridor is crucial not only for regional but also international security.
He added that Egypt intends to actively participate in the African Union’s new mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and is taking steps to secure the necessary funding for the operation.
Joined by Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Egypt Pledges to strengthen Red Sea Security, support the AU Mission in Somalia African Union representatives, and regional economic stakeholders. Al-Sisi noted the challenges facing the continent despite ongoing efforts by African nations.
“Africa’s development still faces many obstacles, including weak infrastructure, insufficient investment, and multiple security threats,” he said.
The president reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with African nations, including Somalia, in combating terrorism through comprehensive approaches that promote security, development, and social cohesion.
He highlighted the role of Al-Azhar and the International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacebuilding, and Reconciliation in Cairo in supporting these efforts.
