MOGADISHU — Somali President Sheikh Hassan Mohammed described Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam as a “great project” that will serve as a vital source of power for the region without harming any country.

Speaking about the massive hydroelectric dam, which generates over 5,000 megawatts, Sheikh Hassan emphasised that the area where the dam was built is not farmland, dismissing concerns about water shortages.

“The dam will have a positive impact on Ethiopia’s economy and beyond,” the president said, noting that Ethiopia plans to supply electricity to neighbouring countries, including Kenya, Sudan, and Djibouti, with Somalia potentially benefiting in the future.

“Electricity is the most important prerequisite for any development,” he added, praising the efforts of the Ethiopian government and people in successfully completing the project.

When asked about Somalia’s view on Egypt’s opposition to the dam, Sheikh Hassan highlighted Somalia’s shared border of more than 2,000 kilometres with Ethiopia and expressed support for Ethiopia’s development.

He further stated that the dam issue primarily concerns Ethiopia and Sudan, and that the three countries are prepared to cooperate on a joint approach to the matter.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated his commitment to working towards an agreement with Egypt over the dam.
