Fighting Between Somali Forces and Al-Shabaab Rage for Days in Strategic Town

ABOOREY, Somalia - Intense fighting has been ongoing since April 8 in the strategic village of Aboorey, located in Somalia’s central Hiiraan region, where federal government forces, backed by local militia, have engaged in heavy clashes with Al-Shabaab militants.

Both sides have reportedly suffered significant casualties as combatants seek to entrench their positions. Military sources suggest that a recent drop in aerial support for Somali forces may be slowing their advance and contributing to the protracted nature of the conflict.

Security officials have expressed growing concern over Al-Shabaab’s efforts to disrupt critical supply routes from the town of Bulobarde, a logistical hub for government operations. The militant group is also reportedly attempting to establish a foothold in the nearby area of Yasooman — a move analysts warn could further destabilize the broader Hiiraan region.

The security situation on the ground remains volatile, with residents facing mounting threats to their safety and livelihoods. Despite repeated claims by Somali authorities that the village has been retaken, local reports indicate that Al-Shabaab continues to maintain a presence in and around Aboorey.

Senior army officers and soldiers were killed in the battle in Aboorey town last week.

The federal government and HirShabelle state officials are expected to coordinate a response involving both military and diplomatic measures in a bid to restore stability to the conflict-affected area.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for over a decade, frequently targeting military installations, infrastructure, and civilians.
