MOGADISHU, Somalia — Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed sharply criticized the federal government over the country’s deteriorating security situation and what he described as increasing repression of independent journalists and media outlets in Mogadishu.

Speaking as a member of parliament, Ahmed condemned the arrest and intimidation of journalists, saying such actions undermine democracy and the rule of law in Somalia.

“Freedom of expression and an independent press are fundamental pillars of any legitimate government,” he said. “It is unacceptable for journalists to be silenced or harassed for political reasons.”

The former president urged the government to respect journalists' rights and immediately stop interfering with the work of independent media. He accused authorities of carrying out a campaign of suppression and threats against the press.

“These acts of repression are unacceptable,” Sheikh Sharif said, calling on the government to end what he described as authoritarian behavior.

Government officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
