NEW DELHI — India has dismissed viral social media claims that it had held official talks with Somaliland’s leadership and was preparing to recognize the breakaway Somali region as a sovereign state, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a fact-check post on X, formerly Twitter.

In a brief statement, the MEA’s fact-check unit labeled the online posts as fake, rejecting assertions that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had engaged in formal discussions with Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro or that India was poised to extend diplomatic recognition to Somaliland. The unit also refuted social media claims that Somalia had recalled its ambassador to India over the alleged move.

Screenshots circulating online purported to show official engagement between New Delhi and Hargeisa, the capital of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, which the MEA said had no basis in fact.

The clarification comes amid a broader and sensitive international debate over Somaliland’s status. The ruling underscores the Indian government’s efforts to counter misinformation on social media at a time when digital rumor and disinformation campaigns have become a significant challenge for democracies worldwide.
