Mogadishu Blast: Women Injured Amid Fiery ATMIS Convoy Chaos

Mogadishu, Somalia - At least three women were injured in an explosion that occurred on Monday at the KM4 intersection in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The medical department has confirmed the injuries, though the cause of the explosion remains unknown.

The incident took place while a convoy of the African Union Transitional Mission (ATMIS) was passing through the area. Photos and videos from the scene show that one of the ATMIS vehicles, specifically a supply transport, caught fire at the back.

A police officer, speaking to the media, said, "The women suffered minor injuries because of the car's flames that spread when fuel spilled from the car." The officer did not comment on the cause of the explosion but emphasized that the police have initiated an investigation. The findings will be shared with the public once available.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident thus far. However, it is worth noting that Al-Shabaab has previously targeted convoys belonging to ATMIS forces and the soldiers of the federal government of Somalia.

This week, the ATMIS command celebrated its first anniversary since being renamed from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is set to conclude its mission in December 2024.

As the investigation into the explosion continues, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to maintain security and stability in the region.
