More Al-shabaab terrorists killed in Somalia
Breaking News
MOGADISHU, Somalia - In the last 48 hours, a total of over 70 Al-Shabaab militants have been killed across the country following covert operations that were carried out by the Somali National Army [SNA], which is on the frontline in the fight against the Al-Qaida linked group.
At Lower Shebelle, an operation targeting the militants left at least 20 of them dead in El Mara-ade village, officials said, in one of the final operations targeting the militants in pursuit of administration of civilian leadership in the notorious hotspot.
Reports indicate that the army’s commando force known as Gor Gor spearheaded the operation, also destroying several Al-Shabaab hideouts including a militant court and tax collection office in the area, which are integral in the group's survival.
The army is involved in non-stop military operations aimed at degrading and driving out Al-Shabaab in as many areas as possible across the country, but the impact of these operations is hard to see as the group continues its attacks on military and civilian targeted unabated.
Lower Shebelle has been one of the most contested regions between the military and the militants who still control huge chunks of it. The Shebelle valley is considered strategic in the liberation of Somalia from the group, which has been causing chaos for the last couple of years.
This comes after Garowe Online reported about the liberation of several villages in Mudug within Central Somalia in an operation that saw several locals help the army to counter the militants, in an operation that also leftover 50 Al-Shabaab militants dead.
However, the militant group Al-Shabaab displayed weapons purportedly seized following yesterday’s attack on the town of Ba’adweyne. Earlier armed villagers speaking to the media argued they recovered some of the vehicles carrying heavy guns. Both sides suffered casualties per residents.
Although the group can still wage small to large scale sporadic attacks, it has been substantially degraded following multiple operations across the country. Besides SNA, the African Union Mission Forces and the US Africa Command have been helping the country to liberate several strategic towns.
