MOGADISHU, Somalia - For the third day in a row, the Somali National Army (SNA) has gathered momentum in the fight against Al-Shabaab. This group is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.

According to reports, the army conducted several operations targeting the militants in the Al-Shabaab base in Abagbeday, approximately 20km from Hudur town in the Bokool region within Southwest state.

Sources within the military said the operation targeted top Al-Shabaab leaders who have been instrumental in spearheading the group’s gains within southern regions. The key figures were eliminated during the crackdown.

This comes hours after two key Al-Shabaab operatives surrendered in Lower Jubba. The Somali National Army and local forces have led mass killings of the militants in strategic towns in multiple operations.

Other reports indicate that clashes were reported in Jubbaland state where dozens of suspected Al Shabaab militants were killed, and government forces successfully repelled attacks and safely detonated car bombs.

The operation was part of a broader effort to combat Al-Shabaab’s presence in Somalia. On Monday, over 135 Alshabaab fighters were killed in Jubaland in what could be the greatest setback against the group in the recent past.

Somalia is fighting Al-Shabaab which has created a toxic working environment, including killing innocent civilians and government officials, with security teams being the most affected. The group still controls central and southern regions.
