Somali Army Kills Al-Shabaab Fighters in Central Offensive

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) killed more Al-Shabaab militants over the weekend, in the latest crackdown within central Somalia, where the militants have been trying to push for control in the last couple of months.

Alongside international partners in the Galgaduud region, the military initiated a crackdown within Nooleye village in a battle that lasted for several hours, given the resistance from the group, which is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.

In a statement, the defence ministry said that the raid was part of ongoing offensives to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s network and restore stability in central Somalia. Galguduud has been the epicentre of battles between the militants and the forces.

It further stated that the operation demonstrated growing coordination between Somali troops and their allies, who have steadily increased pressure on the militants. According to reports, the army is steadily gaining ground despite the initial setback.

The government has pledged to intensify military campaigns to eradicate al-Shabaab and Islamic State-linked cells, which have long undermined Somalia’s security. But recently, the Somali National Army lost key strategic towns to the militants.

Security analysts say improved training, equipment, and international backing are giving Somali forces the upper hand in the fight against terrorism, a campaign officials describe as critical for securing peace and economic recovery across the Horn of Africa.

Some of the frontlines retaken from the Somali National Army include Mahas, Adan Yabaal, and Moqokori districts. The military, however, is confident of making a tremendous comeback given the massive level of organization.
