MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali military has announced that a senior commander of the militant group, Al-Shabaab, was killed on Sunday in a special operation by the U.S.-trained DANAB unit in the south of the country.

The state media, citing unnamed officials reported that Abdullahi Osman alias Dhega-Adde, Al-Shabaab’s officer in charge of the media wing was killed in a covert raid conducted in the Middle Jubba region.

The slain commander was an important figure of the Al-Qaeda-linked group in Somalia and his killing is a huge blow to the group which has wreaked havoc in East Africa, killing thousands of people.

On 14th October in 2017, Al-Shabaab militants blamed for the country’s deadliest terrorist bombing in Mogadishu that killed nearly 1,000 people and wounded hundreds of civilians.

The killing comes amidst stepped-up military operations in parts of southern Somalia by SNA forces with the support of African Union soldiers and the U.S. army, frequently targeting Al-Shabaab with drone strikes.

Al-Shabaab has been fighting the weak Federal government for over a decade in an attempt to take control of the whole country despite defeats in the battleground.
