Somalia: Central Bank worker steals half a million dollars

MOGADISHU, Somalia-A treasurer at Somalia’s Central Bank has stolen more than half a million dollars from the country’s highest monetary authority, Governor Bashir Isse Ali has revealed.

The long-serving cashier identified as Mohiyadin Mohamed Hassan—now on the run according to officials –replaced USD 530,000 with fake bills.

Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are currently investigating and dealing with the theft, Ali told the media on Thursday.

UN-backed government officials were implicated in large scale misappropriation of public funds in UN Monitoring Group reports.

Western donors have been wary of the credibility of financial institutions of cash-strapped national government in Mogadishu.
