Somalia moves to protect citizens in Turkey

ANKARA - The Federal Government of Somalia has taken an initiative to protect the rights of its citizens living in Turkey, a friendly nation supporting stability at home, following concerns over residency and challenges around documentation.

Fathudin Ali Mohamed, the country's ambassador to Turkey, said he is aware of the challenges, adding that deliberate actions have been taken to protect the individuals affected in the frequent crackdown against Somalis in Turkey.

While meeting Turkey’s Interior Minister, Fathudin Ali Mohamed raised concerns about Somalis facing difficulties during the regularisation of their stay in the country in accordance with the laws of Turkey.

“We held constructive talks on ways to simplify residency processes and safeguard the dignity of Somali nationals living in Turkey,” the ambassador said. “Our priority is to ensure that Somalis abroad are treated fairly and in accordance with Turkish law.”

During the meeting, the envoy also emphasized the traditional relationship between Somalia and Turkey, citing Ankara's close collaboration with Mogadishu over the last decade, including security cooperation.

He thanked the Turkish government for its continued support in education, health, and community development. Turkey has the largest overseas military training center in Somalia and is responsible for training the elite Gorgor troops.

“The strength of our people abroad reflects the strength of our nation,” he said, noting that protecting Somali citizens overseas is part of Somalia’s wider effort to strengthen its global image and diplomatic influence.

His remarks come amid growing reports of Somali nationals facing deportation or legal uncertainty due to tighter residency regulations in Turkey. Ankara is involved in Somalia's rebuilding journey.
