Somalia: President Hassan Sheikh’s Meeting with Opposition Ends in Failure Amid Deepening Disputes

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A meeting held between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition leaders has reportedly ended in failure, as disagreements over constitutional amendments and the electoral process continue to escalate.

Sources close to the talks say the meeting, which was aimed at narrowing political differences, broke down due to persistent divisions surrounding proposed changes to the constitution and the framework for upcoming elections.

President Mohamud, whose term is approaching its end - May 2026, is facing mounting challenges, including securing a political consensus on the electoral roadmap and addressing the country’s deteriorating security situation.

The failure of the talks further complicates efforts to steer Somalia toward a stable transition, with opposition leaders accusing the president of attempting to push through unilateral reforms without broad-based agreement.

As the political stalemate deepens, pressure is growing on Villa Somalia to find a path forward that ensures both inclusivity and credibility in Somalia’s fragile democratic process.

Puntland and Jubaland have officially suspended cooperation with the Federal Government of Somalia, accusing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of violating the constitution and concentrating power in his hands.

The two Federal States condemned what they described as unconstitutional actions by the president, claiming he has sidelined federal principles and undermined the spirit of power-sharing outlined in the Provisional Constitution.

The move further deepens Somalia’s political crisis, exacerbating tensions between Mogadishu and regional administrations. Analysts warn that the breakdown in cooperation could weaken ongoing military operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which continues to pose a serious threat across large parts of the country.

The political rift comes at a critical time, with the country already facing challenges related to the electoral process, constitutional reform, and security. There has been no immediate response from Villa Somalia regarding the accusations.
