Somalia: Puntland President Leaves Mogadishu After Talks Fail to Reach Agreement

MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 16 — Said Abdullahi Deni has left Mogadishu on Saturday following the failure of political talks held between May 13 and 15 involving Somalia’s key political stakeholders.

Deni, the president of Puntland state, was part of opposition figures engaged in discussions with the federal government aimed at resolving disputes over the country’s electoral and political framework.

The talks, which brought together federal and opposition representatives, ended without a breakthrough, amid continued disagreements over the structure and direction of Somalia’s political transition.

The federal government and opposition camps have yet to issue detailed public statements on the outcome of the discussions, which were facilitated with international support.

The latest round of talks comes as political tensions remain high in Somalia, with disputes over electoral models and governance arrangements continuing to dominate the national agenda.
