Somalia's opposition to resume protests over delayed elections

MOGADISHU, Somalia - For the second time in as many weeks, Somalia's opposition will go to the streets with an aim of putting the outgoing government on its toes over delayed elections in the country, following a fruitful meeting between the Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and opposition leaders in Mogadishu.

The Prime Minister, who is persistently under pressure to oversee elections, met the team at Decale Hotel in Mogadishu, just three days after a similar meeting, where a host of issues were discussed as the country struggles to contain escalating political disagreements.

And after a lengthy meeting, the opposition announced that peaceful demonstrations will resume on Saturday, March 6 across the country, where the government is expected to provide security for the same of curbing possible violent encounters.

But to make the exercise go on without interruptions, the teams agreed to constitute a Demonstrations Committee which will have members from both the government and the opposition. The teams will provide logistical support for the demonstrators.

Also appointed is the Commission of Enquiry which will investigate the Feb 19 violent shootings in the capital Mogadishu which targeted members of the opposition. The government has been accused of using security forces to intimidate demonstrators, who were exercising their constitutional rights.

"To move ahead with the agreement on Feb 25th, H.E PM Mohamed Roble will meet with the Council of Presidential Candidates this afternoon at Decale Hotel. FGS is ready to talk to anyone with a different view for the interest of our country and go to polls," Ibrahim Moalimuu, a spokesperson in PM's office had said.

Outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has also called for a one-day meeting on Thursday, March 4th where he's expected to meet stakeholders over the implementation of Technical Committee resolutions that was arrived at in Baidoa. The government did not disclose the names of those who have been invited.
