Somalia to Sudan: Choose Peace Over Bloodshed

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia has called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, noting that the country needs to embrace unity and stability for survival, following months of violent clashes in the northern African state.

Ali Mohamed Omar, the country's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, said Somalia supports peaceful coexistence in Sudan, adding that conflicts ravaging the country are igniting danger in the region.

While meeting the Sudan ambassador to Somalia, Abdulrahman Khalil Ahmed Abakr Afandi, Minister Omar said Somalia stands in solidarity with the Sudanese people amid the violence and humanitarian crisis affecting parts of the country, including El Fasher.

The duo also discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation between the two brotherly countries. Sudan and Somalia are both struggling with instability, with their economies also facing recurring stagnation.

During the meeting, they discussed key issues affecting Sudan, including the ongoing conflict and violence in El Fasher, where humanitarian assistance has been severely restricted, state media reports.

They also delved into broader human rights concerns, while also reviewing recent developments in the country’s humanitarian, security, and political landscape, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring access to aid.

The Somali State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reaffirmed Somalia’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, highlighting that a peaceful and political resolution is crucial for ensuring lasting stability and security in the country.

Sudan is yet to recover from the civilian uprising that left Omar el-Bashir ousted, with the military taking over. However, the military is under frequent attack from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary wing that is fighting to take over the state management.
