Somalia: Top Puntland Army General dies in ISIS explosion
BOSASO, Somalia - A senior General serving in the Puntland Counter-Terrorism Forces died in an ISIS explosion, senior officials said, confirming the sad incident which happened during an active operation.
General Ahmed Ali Qarjab alias Qalyare was Puntland’s 2nd Battalion commamder, was killed by an explosion in Dhasaan, in the Al-Miskaad mountains — an area where the regional troops have been conducting operations.
Reports suggest that Ali died alongside members of his guard, who were killed by a landmine near Togga Baalade while fighting ISIS fugitives. The ISIS remnants have been playing hide and seek within Cal-Miskaad mountains in recent weeks.
Mohamed Abdirahman, Puntland’s minister for Environment and Climate Change, hailed the slain officer as a patriot, noting his sacrifices in the line of duty while defending the people of Somalia in the battlefield.
"Their sacrifice is a symbol of bravery, selflessness, and the struggle to secure peace and eliminate terrorism. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdows and give the Puntland forces patience and strength," he said on X (formerly Twitter).
Abdiqaadir Ahmed Aw-Ali, the leader of the newly created Northeastern State, also noted the contributions of the slain military officer, adding that his bravery was undoubtedly above the board while acknowledging significant contributions in the frontlines.
"The President affirmed that Gen. Qalyare will be remembered for his bravery, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to his national duty, standing firm on every frontline and never retreating from responsibility," the state's presidency said.
On Monday, the Puntland Counter-Terrorism Forces announced two airstrikes that targeted caves where fleeing ISIS terrorists were hiding. The strikes were carried out by the Puntland Government’s U.S. partners in support of the forces engaged in the operation, and took place in Baallade Valley.
