Turkish national detained over misconduct in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A Banadir regional court in Mogadishu has ordered for detention of a Turkish national, officials confirmed, noting that he is being charged with misconduct towards Somali employees working in a company affiliated to him and his family.

Ertugrul Karaferiyeli was charged by the office of the Attorney General over the abuse of powers and privileges in running a company within foreign lands, in gross violation of labour laws that provide for decent treatment by those in charge of operations.

The accused is an employee of Favori LLC and Company which manages Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. He was accused of mistreating employees of Somali origin, treating them with a condescending attitude.

The Turkish national has also been accused of engaging in behavior that goes against both workplace norms and ethical standards. He is set to answer the charges in court, and once convicted, the punishment might be punitive, which includes deportation.

In a statement submitted before the court, the office of the Attorney General emphasized the magnitude of the case, adding that the government shall protect labour rights indiscriminately and without fear or favour.

“After reviewing the preliminary evidence provided, the court has ordered the temporary detention of the accused,” the statement read.

Karaferiyeli’s detention comes amid growing concerns over the conduct of Turkish companies operating key infrastructure in Somalia. Turkey is a key development and security partner of the Horn of Africa nation.

The government of Turkey is directly involved in humanitarian support besides engaging in training of the elite troops in the country who are responsible for the fight against the Al-Shabaab group.
