CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Thursday reaffirmed his country’s strong support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, saying Egypt highly values its strategic ties with the Horn of Africa nation.

Sisi made the remarks during talks in Cairo with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, presidential spokesman Mohamed el-Shennawy said.

The Egyptian president stressed his keenness to strengthen cooperation with Eritrea in various fields — particularly economic and investment sectors — to support Afwerki’s efforts to advance national development, the spokesman added.

The two leaders discussed recent regional developments, with Sisi reiterating Egypt’s “steadfast commitment” to backing Eritrea’s sovereignty and stability.

For his part, Afwerki praised Egypt’s role under Sisi in consolidating stability and promoting development in the Horn of Africa and East Africa. He said Eritrea looks forward to boosting economic cooperation with Egypt and enhancing coordination on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The spokesman said Sisi and Afwerki also reviewed the situation in Sudan, expressing aligned views on the importance of ending the conflict. Both presidents underscored the need to support Sudan’s national institutions, especially the Sudanese Armed Forces, and rejected any attempts to form parallel entities.
