Mali’s Goïta takes on defence role as attacks escalate

BAMAKO, May 5 — Mali’s military leader, Assimi Goïta, has assumed the duties of defence minister on an interim basis following a surge in attacks by armed groups, the government said.

The decision comes after a string of assaults targeting military bases and key installations across the country, underscoring worsening security in the Sahel state.

Goïta, who seized power after coups in 2020 and 2021, is expected to directly oversee military operations and national security strategy as authorities step up efforts to counter insurgents operating in several regions.

Mali has faced years of instability linked to Islamist militant groups and other armed factions, despite repeated military offensives.

Officials said the move was aimed at strengthening command and coordination within the armed forces, while signalling resolve to confront growing threats.

The leadership change forms part of broader adjustments to Mali’s security structure as the country continues under military-led transitional rule.
