NAIROBI, Kenya - President William Ruto has called on opposition leader Raila Odinga to halt the anti-government protests that have rocked the country over the past two weeks. In his statement, the President cited the loss of life and destruction of property that have occurred during the demonstrations as the main reason for his appeal.

Ruto emphasized the need for a bipartisan approach to solving the issues facing the country, including the ongoing controversy surrounding the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel. He proposed the use of both chambers of parliament in the selection process, emphasizing that it is not a game of numbers but rather a game of wisdom.

Meanwhile, the President also addressed questions about the freedom of the press in Kenya, declaring that the era of media shutdowns in the country is over. He pledged government support for all media outlets regardless of their political position, stating that a diverse and vibrant media landscape is crucial to upholding freedom of speech.

The Kenyan opposition leader has yet to respond to the Kenyan President's request. On Monday, Raila called on his supporters to participate in the mother of all demonstrations.
