Somalia: Puntland leader returns from Kenya visit amid mediations

GALKAYO, Somalia, October 10, 2015 (Garowe Online)-The President of Somalia’s Northeastern State of Puntland, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali has returned from a week-long visit to Kenya amidst mediation efforts by traditional leaders, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland government has been facing mounting criticism over its mishandling of deadly clan clashes in northern Sool region.

Earlier this week, a group of clan elders from Jubaland landed at Abdullahi Yusuf International Airport in Galkayo, to quell the 10-year-old conflict that lately degenerated into night raids in the village of Qorilyey.

Speaking to reporters on arrival, Ali praised clan elders negotiating between two clans in Qoriley, Maga’lay and Agarane.

“I am very delighted [to hear] that solutions to hostilities in Hawd plateau are in progress. I commend elders involved in the process, and again I reiterate calls for tight security,” he said.

Puntland President held talks with international community representatives including EU’s Michele Cervone d’Urso and Swedish Ambassador, Mikael Lindvall on peace-building endeavors.
