Doha, Qatar (GO) - Former Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has strongly criticized the Federal Parliament’s approval of the Amendment Procedure for the Constitution, branding it a “great misfortune” for the unity of the Somali people. Farmaajo argued that this move reflects the government’s reluctance to effectively counter what he calls “ambitions against the independence and unity of Somalia.”

This statement from Farmaajo followed accusations that the Parliament’s leadership bypassed procedural rules, specifically Article 90, which requires that every bill undergoing a third reading be distributed to the members of parliament, allowing them three days for review. These allegations come at a sensitive time for the country.

During his tenure, Farmaajo was accused of enacting an unlawful extension of his term, which sparked significant controversy and was seen as a breach of the Provisional Federal Constitution of Somalia. This action led to political tensions and constitutional disputes, significantly impacting the country’s stability.

Farmaajo urged the nation’s leaders and the Parliament to heed the diverse calls from Federal Member States, lawmakers, civil society leaders, and intellectuals to ensure a constitutional review based on social consensus, consultation, and mutual understanding.

The former president warned against further divisions and the misuse of state power by specific groups, stating that such actions pose a looming threat to Somalia’s unity and stability.
