Helicopter Carrying Peacekeepers Crashes in Southern Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A military helicopter crashed on the outskirts of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, on Thursday, while carrying African Union peacekeepers.

According to security sources, the incident involved personnel from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), including three Ugandan soldiers, all of whom survived the crash.

A Somali military official, speaking to Garowe Online on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to discuss the matter with the media, confirmed there were no fatalities.

Details regarding the cause of the crash—whether due to technical malfunction or hostile action—have not been disclosed, and both the Somali National Army (SNA) and ATMIS have yet to comment officially on the incident.

The helicopter was en route from Mogadishu to Ballidogle airfield, located approximately 90 kilometers southwest of the capital, where U.S. forces and Somali commandos known as Danab are based. All individuals aboard were reportedly rescued following the crash.

Further investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident.
