MOGADISHU, Somalia - Al-Shabaab fighters did not capture Sabid and Anole from the federal forces and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), multiple sources have confirmed, contradicting initial reports released to the media.

There were reports that the towns had fallen to the militants before a fight back was initiated by the Somali National Army (SNA) and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia.

But the Somali and African Union forces are reportedly close to Barire town in an attempt to remove the militants. Recently, over 10 AU soldiers were killed after a roadside bomb hit their vehicle near Barire.

On 21st June 2025, some reports indicated that Somali and African Union forces recaptured Anole and Sabid village and a key bridge after intense fighting. The town is considered a strategic location within the Horn of Africa nation in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

At that time, officials said al-Shabaab blew up structures, including the bridge and a telecommunications mast, as they retreated. Troops now planning to take the other two bridges - Awdhegle and Barire, reports added at that time.

The militants have, however, made significant gains in central Somalia, retaking Adan Yabaal and Moqokori, which are essential supply routes to the frontlines. The Somali army is working hard to retake the villages from the militants.

The Federal Government of Somalia has been accused of failing to instill discipline and order by protecting civilians, instead focusing on controversial changes in the constitution, leading to the resurgence of al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab militants are fighting to take over the government, and some reports showcase possible infiltration of the militants into the army. The government of Somalia has, however, persistently denied the claims that have crowded the country.
