MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's Military Court has freed a young couple associated with the Al-Shabaab militant group, in a case that has captured public attention and showcased an unusual judicial approach to insurgent defectors.

Hafso Mohamed Moalim was detained in Mogadishu along with other girls while traveling to meet her husband, Abshir Aden Mohamed, in Al-Shabaab-controlled El-Buur town in the central Galgaduud region. Her court appearance led to Abshir's decision to surrender to authorities, marking his exit from Al-Shabaab.

In a statement surrounded by Somali lawmakers and ministers, Abshir expressed his appreciation for the court's decision. "I am happy with the way the court honored me and my wife by granting us freedom...The government has welcomed us warmly, and I urge those in Al-Shabaab to seize this opportunity," he said.

The court not only ordered their release but also endorsed their union. In a symbolic gesture, government officials and MPs at the court contributed money towards the couple's wedding, highlighting a broader policy of reintegration for those leaving militant groups.

Somalia's State Minister for Defense Omar Ali Abdi commented on the case, noting, "Abshir is a young man who was misled, but now he sees the existence of a functioning government."

This case has become one of the most talked-about legal proceedings in recent days, gaining significant attention on social media platforms. It highlights the complex and often unexpected cases that come before Somalia's military courts.
