Somali President Arrives in Uganda for Talks on Security, Economic Ties

KAMPALA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Uganda on Friday at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni, aiming to strengthen relations between the two nations.

During his visit, President Mohamud met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations, particularly in the areas of security, economy, and the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Mohamud, accompanied by Somalia's Minister of Defence and other senior officials, was warmly received at State House Entebbe where Museveni highlighted the deepening cooperation and longstanding bilateral ties.

The discussions, which echoed those from Mohamud's last visit to Uganda on October 19, 2024, at State Lodge, Nakasero, covered a range of topics including bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual concern. A significant portion of the talks focused on the security scenario in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, stressing the necessity for sustained peace and stability.

Both leaders honored the efforts of the Troop and Police Contributing Countries to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Somali Security Forces, acknowledging their sacrifices in the fight against Al-Shabaab since 2007.

Museveni praised the Somali government and its people for their resilience and commitment to stabilizing Somalia. In response, Mohamud thanked Uganda for its continuous support in securing peace in Somalia since 2007 and acknowledged the hospitality extended during his visit.

Following the meeting, President Mohamud is scheduled to depart for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, later today. There, he will attend an extraordinary summit focused on the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Dar es Salaam summit aims to bolster efforts to address the escalating violence in the region. Somalia reiterated its commitment to full cooperation and support for peace and progress throughout the region.
