MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Danab Special Forces killed over 15 Al-Shabaab militants in a coordinated operation within Middle Shabelle, in what comes amid growing anxiety over possible infiltration of the militants in the military, which is mandated to protect civilians.

The latest offensive by the Special Forces is aimed at dismantling the militants in central and southern regions, following over two decades of dominance, which has significantly impacted the economy and stability of the country.

The operation, officials said, was conducted at Masaajid Cali Gaduud town in central regions, with the elite forces using airstrikes with the help of international partners. The partners have been instrumental in the fight against both Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

According to reports, among those killed was Bashir Ahmed Dhuxul alias Bashir Caadale, who is believed to have served as Al-Shabaab regional propagandist in Middle Shabelle. His death, officials said, is a significant milestone in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

During the crackdown, security forces destroyed three vehicles including three military vehicles and two trucks used by the militants for mobility within the region, the Somali National Army reported after the operation.

“The operation struck at the heart of Al-Shabaab’s staging areas, forcing militants to retreat in disarray,” an SNA spokesperson said. “This is part of our broader strategy to eliminate terrorist threats and restore peace across Somalia.”

The government reiterated its commitment to continuing offensive operations against militant groups and warned that any threats to civilian safety would be met with “decisive force and zero tolerance.”

The government of Somalia has reiterated its commitment to effectively win the fight against Al-Shabaab, a group that is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed administration under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
