Ethiopians welcomes Safaricom network in Addis Ababa a head of the official launch ceremony

ADDIS ABABA - East African leading telecommunication-Safaricom Limited has fully launched in Addis Ababa –Ethiopia’s capital city.

This follows the much-awaited official launch ceremony that will be presided over by Kenya’s head of state President William Ruto and his Ethiopian counterpart Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

According to Peter Ndegwa - Safaricom- Kenya, Chief Executive Officer "This much-awaited launch reiterates our commitment to contribute to Ethiopia’s digital transformation and inclusion agenda and I can assure you that the firm's board in Kenya is actively supporting the Ethiopian management to ensure that the telco sets up a strong foundation.”

He also congratulated Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa, for the achievement he has undertaken to reform Ethiopia’s telecommunications reforms.

Ndegwa "These efforts and more would not have been possible without the support of the government of Ethiopia with whom we have worked together since the licensing and our preparations for this commercial launch are encouraged that the milestones mentioned by Anwar Soussa, contribute to the country’s telecommunications reforms, digital transformation and inclusion objectives.”

Earlier Thursday morning President William Ruto left the country for Ethiopia where he will preside over the launch of Safaricom country.
President Ruto is expected to join Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to preside over the launch of Safaricom commercial operations in Addis Ababa.

The two leaders will also hold bilateral talks in Addis Ababa.

Mid this year, Safaricom announced that it will start commercial services in Ethiopia.

Ever since the granting of the license by the Ethiopian government mid-last year, Safaricom has invested in its network and infrastructure, including its own mobile radio towers, national transmission network, and wholesale agreements for international connectivity.

Ndegwa also assured the Ethiopia branch of full support and guidance to ensure the promises are delivered.
