Somalia: Puntland state denies peace agreement with Galmudug

GAROWE, Puntland- The government of Somalia's northeastern region of Puntland, has spoken about recent reports claiming that a peace pact was brokered between Puntland and neighboring Galmudug to end hostility in Mudug region, Garowe online reports.

During an interview with Radio Garowe, Puntland Environment Minister, Ali Abdullai Warsame, has denied any reports of a peace deal and suggested it was claimed by Somali government and Galmudug. Minister Warsame also stated that there is no reconciliation efforts being pushed to ease the tensions in Galkayo city.

He also said communication over the phone between ministers from both sides has taking place, and said: "Puntland government has already given its stand and resolutions to end conflict and ensure peace in the region, but there is no response from Galmudug authority yet.'

The situation in Galkayo town is relatively calm, as plans to construct the livestock market is ongoing and the businesses has returned to normal in the city, added Minister Warsame.

He also denied the allegations of high displacement of residents and said those figures were "blown out of proportion". Government plans to build livestock market is for the development of the city and will serve the interest of Somali people, said Warsame.

He later said that Puntland has never planned to invade neighboring region but said its government's duty to protect its people and territory.

His statement comes following an early report published by GO indicating an underway peace deal between Puntland and Galmdug brokered by Somali leaders, whereas some Puntland ministers and security officials opposing the agreement, citing discriminatory and unfairness by Federal government.

The warring administrations have fought on various occasions in Galkayo city and witnessed recently intensified clashes between forces loyal to Puntland and Galmudug.

In December 2015, a peace deal was reached between the two regions but both failed to commit to the deal after dispute over the construction of livestock market near border between the two regions.
