Just as work has begun on Garowe airport, Garowe Online takes a closer look at the timeline for events. Moreover for correction in the earlier version of this news, Garowe and Bossaso airports were part of a raft of infrastructure projects -almost all funded by Italy- between 1980 and 1990.However, the two projects doomed with Somalia state collapse in 1991.

Kuwait made financial pledge for the construction of Garowe airport and Makhir University during a visit by former Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole in December 2010.

Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry Under-Secretary Alfredo Mantica visited Puntland capital, Garowe to announce his government’s financial aid for the renovation of Bossaso airport in subsequent meeting with President Farole in 2011.

Puntland government officially secured funds amounting to USD 10 million from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) in October 2013.

In April 2014, Puntland Finance Minister clinched a deal with Dr. Nabil Abdul Raheem, the chairman of Nabeel Abdul-Raheem Consulting Firm (NARCO) in Kuwait.

In March 2014, Dubai meeting attended by Arab business executives reviewed airport improvement tender.

Of the USD 10 million granted in loan to Puntland, Turkish contracting firm, SMK Group won the tender worth a total of $6 million in September 2015.

Turkish contractors shipped heavy machineries and other equipment from Djibouti earlier this month.

On Saturday, Puntland laid foundation stone of paved runway, terminals, air traffic control tower, parking spots and lighting as well as fire and rescue stations, with Puntland leadership and Dr. Farole present.
