KISMAYO, Jan 21 — Al-Shabaab fighters launched a heavy attack early Wednesday on a Jubaland security forces base in Kuday, Lower Jubba, local sources said.

Residents reported that the assault began with explosions, followed by direct clashes between government troops and the attackers. Kuday is a strategic coastal area, about 60 kilometers south of the port city of Kismayo.

Jubaland security officials said their forces repelled the assault, preventing Al-Shabaab from entering the base.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab issued a statement claiming they had taken full control of the base and Kuday island, and said they killed and captured several soldiers. The claims could not be independently verified.

The exact number of casualties remains unclear, and the situation in the area is still tense.

This latest attack highlights ongoing security challenges in southern Somalia, where Al-Shabaab continues to target government and regional forces.
