Chargé d’Affaires to lead US mission to Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia, September 8, 2015 (Garowe Online)-The United States diplomatic mission to Somalia has commenced operations, the Department of State announced on Wednesday.

“The Department of State is pleased to announce the commencement of operations by the United States Mission to Somalia,” the State Department said in statement.

The new mission which is based within the US embassy in Nairobi reflects US efforts to normalize bilateral relationship with the war-ravaged Horn of African Nation.

On May 5, during a few and far between visit to Mogadishu, the US secretary of State John Kerry announced the launch of the mission.

“U.S. officials will continue to travel to Somalia to conduct official business as security conditions permit,” U.S. Department of State unveiled.

Charge d’Affaires will lead the US mission until the next ambassador is appointed by the President.

On January 17, 2013, Obama administration officially recognized Somalia’s first-ever permanent government in over two decades.
