Ex-PM Urges Somali Govt to Support Federal States in Eradicating Al-Shabaab, ISIS by 2025

MOGADISHU, Somalia — In the aftermath of Puntland's military thwarting an ISIS assault in Dharjaale, claiming the lives of at least eight foreign combatants, former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid has pressed the Somali Federal Government for increased political and security assistance across all Federal Member States. His appeal is for a concerted effort to stamp out Al-Shabaab and ISIS by the close of 2025.

Abdirashid underscored the critical role of Puntland's counter-terrorism operations, arguing that these successes not only enhance local security but necessitate a unified response from the national government. "The Federal Government must not only commend these actions but also engage in a strategic, nationwide plan to obliterate these terrorist groups," he declared in a recent statement.

However, the Federal Government has yet to offer any official recognition or commendation of Puntland's efforts against these terrorist entities. This silence has sparked debate among political analysts and regional leaders, questioning the cohesion of Somalia's anti-terrorism strategy.

The lack of communication from the central government highlights ongoing political frictions between Somalia's Federal states and its federal leadership, which have historically hindered national security efforts. While Puntland demonstrates robustness in counter-terrorism, experts argue that a unified national approach is essential for sustainable peace.

The former PM's call for action arrives at a pivotal moment in Somalia's battle against terrorism, where the government's next steps could redefine the trajectory of security operations nationwide.
