Hormuud Telecom unveils 5G network in Somalia

Mogadishu (GO) - Somalia's telecommunications giant; Hormuud Telecom, has unveiled new 5G network in the country, in what would tremendously boost coverage and services for customers, who use its products in the Horn of Africa nation which is undergoing state-building.

The new network is now commercially available in nine centers across the country, officials said during the launch in Mogadishu. Hormuud Telecom is the largest telecommunications provider in the country, winning reputation of a 'dependable and reliable' corporate.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was one of the dignitaries in Hormuud's success story, further signifying the milestones the company has made in shaping telecommunication industry across the region. The president lauded the management for 'invaluable' contribution to the economy of Somalia.

The 5G network enables faster, more reliable internet connectivity, offering more than 80% coverage, the company said in a statement. Hormuud Telecom intends to spread the success to remote areas of the country, the challenges notwithstanding.

“This is a significant development for many Somalis – including those who do not have a traditional bank account and who rely on mobile money services for business and leisure,” statement added.

Hormuud estimates that 70% of Somalia's population is covered by 4G network, and they predict that figure to rise this year to 88% of urban populations and approximately 70% of rural communities, the statement further revealed.

Somalia has laboured to transform its economy through investors, despite security challenges which are effectively being addressed. Hormuud Telecom also supports nation building through various CSR activities, including education and SMEs.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has invested in security to boost fortunes of the country on matters development, leading to attraction of more investors. The country's economy is projected to grow to 3.7% up from 2.8% in 2022 according to data from World Bank.
