MOGADISHU, Somalia - Concerned with the rising insecurity and Al-Shabaab raids, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held an emergency meeting on Friday, bringing together several security players and stakeholders in the Horn of Africa nation.

Al-Shabaab activities have increased in recent weeks, with the group targeting innocent civilians, security forces, and senior government officials. The group has also been collecting illegal taxes through unauthorized road checks across Somalia.

These actions have raised fears of expanding attacks in the region, further destabilizing the capital and its surrounding areas, particularly along Lower Shabelle. Officials, Barre urged, should formulate a comprehensive strategy to neutralize the team.

The PM emphasized the need for urgent and coordinated action to ensure the safety of civilians, while also focusing on the swift elimination of militant activity in areas surrounding Mogadishu.

“The challenge we face is serious, and it requires a united front,” Barre said. “It is vital that we strengthen the cooperation between our security forces, intelligence agencies, and local communities. Only through this synergy can we hope to neutralize the terrorist threat effectively," he said.

Local communities, he added, play a pivotal role in combating terrorism, noting that vigilance from locals would help security teams effectively fight the al-Shabaab militants. Civilians, he said, should assist in identifying Al-Shabaab threats.

“We must work together to protect our nation. The security of our citizens is paramount, and each individual has a role to play in this battle,” Barre added.

For the last two months, the government has intensified the crackdown against al-Shabaab in central and southern regions, leading to the death of several al-Shabaab militants within the country. Several others have also surrendered.

The long-term strategy is to defeat the militants, who have traditionally sought to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia. However, a strong military response and close partnerships with civilians have held the government intact.
