Somali woman makes history as she wins top seat in America

WASHINGTON - Somalis in the diaspora have continued to make huge strides in global politics, following the latest victory in the Washington state of America, in what shapes their fortunes in the world of politics.

Hamdi Mohamed made history as the first Somali woman elected into office in Washington state as a member of the Commission at Port of Seattle, in the latest elections, which also uplifts the role of women in the political arena.

In a tweet, Hamdi Mohamed, hailed her constituents for the deserved victory, adding that her victory was "amazing" in the sense that she becomes the first woman to be elected into the powerful office in the US.

"We have officially won our race for the Port of Seattle Commission! It's an amazing feeling to become the first Port Commissioner ever elected from South King County and the first Somali woman to be elected into office in Washington state. Thank you all! We did it," she said.

Hamdi Mohamed was originally born in Somalia before her family moved to the US following a civil war in the Horn of Africa nation while she was 3-years-old. The country almost broke apart leading to the ouster of former President Siad Barre, who was a military ruler.

It's not just her who has made it in American politics. Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota 5th District Congresswoman, is perhaps the most known Somali refugee in America who has dominated politics for the last three years since her victory.

Ms. Omar, a Progressive Democrat, hit headlines when she put at task former President Donald Trump over alleged racist remarks. Ms. Omar successfully defended her seat in November 2020 polls after a heated contest.

In Canada, Ahmed Hussein, the current Minister for Housing, has been in office for a couple of years, helping shape politics in North America. Until last month, he served in the critical docket of the Immigration Department.
