MOGADISHU, Somalia – Militants from Al-Shabaab launched an attack on the Buulo Xaaji area in the Lower Juba region, triggering a fierce battle that lasted for hours.

So far, casualties from the armed clash remain unverified, and the Jubaland administration has yet to issue a conclusive statement regarding the incident.

Buulo Xaaji is located approximately 80 kilometers from Kismayo, the interim capital of Jubaland, a federal member state of Somalia. The attack comes amid heightened political tensions between Jubaland and Somalia’s federal government, which have recently escalated, with both sides mobilizing troops.

The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further developments in Lower Juba as both sides prepare for renewed confrontation. Sources on the ground report military movements that could alter the dynamics of the ongoing conflict in the region.

In a related development, sources told Garowe Online that a battalion of presidential guards from Villa Somalia has been deployed to the Raaskambooni area to reinforce government positions.

It is unclear if these deployments are linked to a rumored visit by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who is reportedly planning to address troops in Raaskambooni.

This military maneuver coincides with Kenya’s withdrawal of troops from the area, citing concerns about being drawn into the escalating conflict.

Observers warn that the federal government’s actions could inadvertently create an opportunity for Al-Shabaab to exploit the political rift, further destabilizing the region and undermining collective efforts to combat the militant group.
