Somalia: Delegate killed in Galmudug, outgoing MP re-elected in the parliamentary election

Adado, Somalia- Tension is mounting high in the central town of Adado, the interim capital of Galmudug state following a delegate has been shot dead in front of the polling station on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

Sources told GO that a delegate whose name has not been identified yet, was gunned down by AMISOM soldiers who been deployed recently to Galmudug region to secure the ongoing electoral process.

The source added, the parliamentary election in Galmudug has recently witnessed internal disputes between sub-clans contending for the seats in the upcoming Lower House chamber of Federal Parliament, which led to heightened tensions in the town.   

However, the incident occurred in the morning, as the delegates where heading to the polling center to cast their vote among parliamentary candidates.

So far Galmudug and AMISOM officials haven’t released any statement in regards to the killing of the delegate.

Galmudug state is holding the second phase of the Lower House election on Wednesday, and saw the victory of the outgoing MP Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuhulow for the first seat, after beating his rival and securing majority 47 votes.

Husain Qasim “Iidow” has also secured a seat in the election, a former State Minister of Presidential Affairs for Galmudug state, and is believed to be backed by Galmudug President for the parliamentary seat against his rival Abdirahman “Ayante”, a Federal Minister of Planning and International cooperation.  

On the other hand, Botan Isse Alin, a former leader of armed militia and Hasan Moalin Mohamed, Chairman of Daljir party, have won seats in the parliamentary election.

Today’s polling is expected to end with the election of 9 candidates in Adado town, amid reports of conflicts among sub-clans over the selection process of delegates, who accused officials of the Somali government-term ended in September 10- of interference to back allied candidates for the seats.
