MOGADISHU, Somalia - The government of Somalia could resume talks with the breakaway region of Somaliland, an envoy has hinted, in what could be geared towards ending animosity.

Abdikarim Hussein Guled, the former Galmadug president who was recently appointed as envoy for Somaliland, noted that the federal government of Somalia could soon activate talks with Hargeisa as the country tries to look for a lasting solution for the Somaliland state in the north.

Somaliland declared self-independence in 1991 but since then, the region is yet to be recognized internationally, with Somalia maintaining that it's part of her territory. Most members of the international community associate with Somaliland based on the single Somalia policy.

Mr. Guled spoke during a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia [SRSG] representative Anita Kiki who promised more aid towards rebuilding and restoring peace and stability in Somalia. The two factions have been wrangling for ages without a formidable solution.

Mrs. Kiki who promised to stand with Somalia in its journey toward political stability and peace added the United Nations will offer any necessary aid to the people of Somalia. The UN and African Union have been pushing for peace and stability in Somalia but there have not been any formal stand on the agitation by Somaliland.

Guled was recently appointed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to lead talks with Somalia.

There are claims that regional leader Muse Bihi Abdi has agreed to meet with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud under the stewardship of Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Mohamud maintains that Somaliland remarks part of Somalia, warning secessionists against pushing for their own country.
