Somalia: Federal Government Declares Mandate of Southwest State President Expired

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal government escalated a deepening political standoff with the Southwest State administration on Sunday, declaring the regional leadership’s term in office officially expired and moving to initiate a transition process.

In a formal statement, the Federal Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation asserted that President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed, popularly known as Laftagareen, no longer holds a valid mandate. The ministry stated it has been tasked with overseeing the selection of new leadership to prevent a power vacuum in Somalia.

The move marks a significant fracture in the delicate relationship between Mogadishu and the federal member states. Federal officials argued that the move is a necessary step to uphold constitutional timelines, while supporters of the Southwest leadership have previously signaled that any attempt by the central government to intervene in regional tenures would be viewed as an unlawful encroachment.

The regional presidency has yet to issue a formal response to the ministry's declaration, but the escalating rhetoric has raised concerns regarding potential instability in a region critical to the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab militants.

Under current protocols, the federal government indicated it would begin coordinating with local stakeholders to organize the process for filling the vacant seats, though specific dates for a new election or selection committee have not been announced.

Meanwhile, the Southwest state is reportedly planning to hold an indirect election to pick a new parliament, which will vote for a president after the state cut off cooperation relations with the Somali government, citing interference in its internal affairs.
