​Somalia: Foreign jets bomb Al Shabaab camp in Southern Somalia

JANALE, Somalia- Suspected U.S. jets are reported to have carried out an overnight airstrikes against Al Shabaab camp in Lower Shabelle region in Southern Somalia, Garowe Online reports. 

Sources told GO that U.S. forces have used two helicopters to raid Al Shabaab training base in Wayo-arag, about 7 km away from Janale district. 

Following the airstrikes, foreign Soldiers dropping down from the helicopters have engaged with Al Shabaab militants in a deadly gunfight on the ground, source said.

Although Al Shabaab is yet to comment on the airstrikes, local residents told GO over the phone that several training bases in the area were destroyed in the raid.

These reports are yet to be confirmed by the United States or Somali government, as U.S. provides military support to Somali troops in their fight against Al Shabaab militants in central and southern Somalia.

In recent years, U.S. has been launching air attacks targeting Al Shabaab camps and senior commanders.

On the other hand, Al Shabaab said it has taken control of Kabtan-laas, a small town near the coastal town of Marka from the Somali government forces following an attack.
