MOGADISHU, Somalia -- Somali National Army (SNA) backed by local forces on Tuesday killed six al-Shabab militants and injured others during an offensive operation at an area in Galmudug State, central Somalia.

Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala said the joint forces also recovered weapons during the operation successfully.

"Our forces, SNA, and locals conducted successful operations against terrorists east of Galgaduud region overnight, the forces are still pursuing the militants who escaped during the operation. The army is in full control of the area," Adala said.

The government forces backed by local partners have recently stepped up military operations to flush out al-Shabab militants from their strongholds to stop extortion of the Somali people and the spread of propaganda, intimidation, and extremism in the country.
