Somalia: High Level Partnership Forum concludes in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia, December 8, 2015 (Garowe Online)-A one-day conference on models for electoral transition in 2016 ,and held under the theme ‘Setting the benchmark for Somalia’s future’ has been concluded in Mogadishu on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.
The conference that brought together Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari, Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Southwest State’s Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan, Jubaland President Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe and Interim Galmudug Administration leader Abdikarin Hussein Gulled has focused on alternatives to the suspended popular vote, federalization and formation of united army.
Somali political leaders agreed to meet over options for election in 2016 on December 12, the third meeting of its kind since President Mohamud announced that ‘one person, one vote’ election will not be held in August this year.
Stakeholders stressed on the need for viable electoral model when the current mandate ends.
In attendance were also international community representatives who warned of term extension for federal government leadership.
Nation-wide consultations point to uneven preferences as federal member states remain divided on whether to proceed with 4.5 power sharing formula or that election be based on constituencies.
