Somalia: Hormuud Salaam Foundation provides cash aid to vulnerable women in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Hormuud Salaam Foundation (HSF) has distributed cash grants to vulnerable women and internally displaced persons in Mogadishu, marking the 14th consecutive year of its large-scale Ramadan relief program, the foundation said on Saturday.
The charitable arm of Somalia’s premier telecommunications and banking firms [Hormuud and Salaam Somali Bank] targeted the Gaari Dumar Women’s Development Center and the Somali Women and Youth Care Organization (SWYCD) as part of its "Ramadan Iftar and Support Project for the Needy."
"Today, we delivered a cash donation to the Women’s Development Center to support their Iftar during this blessed month," said Abdirahman Ibrahim Elmi, Deputy Chairman of HSF. "This is part of a broader commitment to stand by our community's most vulnerable members."
The foundation confirmed that this year’s initiative will reach more than 67,000 vulnerable individuals across Somalia. The aid—consisting of both cash and food supplies—is being delivered to a wide range of recipients, including patients in hospitals, inmates in prisons, refugees, persons with disabilities, and those with other special needs.
At the SWYCD center, the foundation provided financial assistance to underprivileged mothers. Raaxo Hussein Hirsi, Deputy Chairperson of HSF, noted that the project is specifically designed to cover basic household needs, allowing families to observe the month of Ramadan with dignity.
Fadumo Mohamed Ali Adle, founder of the Gaari Dumar Center, which provides vocational training for marginalized women, welcomed the aid, noting it was the first time the foundation had reached her facility.
The Hormuud Salaam Foundation remains one of the largest private philanthropic organizations in the Horn of Africa. Its 14-year-long Ramadan project has become a critical social safety net in a region where economic hardship often intensifies during religious holidays.
