Somalia President blames int’l donors for aid budget crunch

MOGADISHU, Somalia, December 10, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Federal Government of Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has taken a jab at international donors for their failure to deliver on billions promised in reconstruction aid, Garowe Online reports.

With outgoing United Nations envoy to Somalia, Ambassador Nicholas Kay looking to, Mohamud told a mini-summit on the country’s economic recovery that implicit funding has proven ‘ineffective’ in viable reforms in the conflict-scarred east African nation.

Faulting on allegations of slush funds and patronage system at Central Bank and Finance Ministry, Somali President has decried mistrust that dealt blow to confidence by international partners in Somalia.

Donors made 1.8 billion euros ($2.5 billion) pledge at Brussels conference toward bolstering fragile military and economic gains in recent years.

Mohamud indicated that the current donor framework of first off putting trust in foreign intermediaries is threatening to scupper priorities of state institutions.

Somali government forces aided by African Union peacekeepers have secured a string of victories against Al Shabaab militants in central and southern Somalia.
