MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says his government will direct energy towards fighting al-Shabaab militants in 2024, adding that the country is determined to restore peace and stability, a key ingredient in the stabilization of Somalia.

According to him, the Somali National Army (SNA) is determined to take over security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which has been integral in the stabilization of the Horn of Africa nation.

The town hall meeting last week, which was broadcast live on social media, saw the president answer questions from citizens on the country's latest political, economic, and security issues.

The first phase of operations against Al-Shabaab, he said, has been completed, adding that the second phase will begin soon. The second phase of operations against Al-Shabaab will focus on Jubaland and Southwest states, he said.

"The operations are continuing, and it has been successful in liberating many areas. Today the Somali people are standing together for the freedom of the country. A lot of tribes have come together to eliminate the terrorists," he said.

Mohamud lauded the role played by the African Union Mission in Somalia which he said has created peace and governance in Somalia by combating al-Shabab terrorists. The ATMIS troops have started withdrawal from the country.

By the end of 2024, ATMIS soldiers are expected to completely withdraw from the country, but the Somali National Army has been able to take over security responsibilities. President Hassan Sheikh is determined to restore peace and stability, prioritizing the fight against Al-Shabaab.
